manipulus (m. pl. manipuli Ang. ‘maniple’)

Literally ‘bundle’ or ‘handful’, this was a tactical unit comprising two centuriae in the Republican period (although centuries and barrack blocks continued to be paired into Imperial times). Aul. Gell. 16.4.6; Plaut., Curc. 585. [Keppie 1984]
