centuria (f. pl. centuriae)

1. A sub-unit of a cohors, originally 100 (and fossilised in Veg., I 2.8), but by the time of the Principate, only 80 milites. (DMC 1). It comprised ten contubernia, a centurio, an optio, and a signifer. 2. By extension, a barrack block intended to house 1 (RIB 334). [Keppie 1984]
