An engineer. The term had a wide range of applications, from lime-burning, to artillery, to tunnelling expertise (RIB 1542; Dig. 50.6.7); a. armamentarius Imperatoris: engineer in the armoury in Rome (CIL VI, 2725; tombstone depicting a catapult). [Goldsworthy 2003]
