74. How much of Hadrian’s Wall is left?

According to a recent study of the Wall, over 91% of the curtain wall is no longer visible, 2% is 19th-century restoration work, more than 5% has been consolidated in the 20th century, and slightly over 1% was destroyed in the 19th and 20th centuries.

  1. Depressing, but a reminder just how valuable what’s left really is. I’ve been following the dig down at Binchester. The depth of the walls of the bath house they’re uncovering is staggering. I do often wonder if places like Carrawburgh and Great Chesters might hold deeply buried surprises still.
