51. How high were milecastles?

373215877_49a93e8229_nThere is good reason to suspect that the curtain wall of a milecastle matched in height Hadrian’s Wall itself. If milecastles had towers, then they will have afforded a height advantage over the curtain wall, although by how much this may have been (one or two storeys at the most) is unclear.
