48. How many men were in a Hadrian’s Wall fort?

The notional strength of a garrison (and the size of its fort) depended upon the type of unit based there. Thus a quingenary infantry or cavalry unit would consist of around 480 men, a milliary unit 800 men, and mixed units in the region of 600 and 1000 respectively. However, it seems likely that, at any one time, a proportion of the garrison would be outposted to man the milecastles, turrets, and gateways along the Wall, so the numbers actually in the forts would be reduced accordingly.
